ABOUT US

Building a Strong Foundation for School Social Work

The Minnesota School Social Workers Association (MSSWA) was founded in 1968 after Minnesota school social workers attended a Midwest Council Conference and returned inspired to create a state association. A steering committee was formed and chaired by Donald Rinkenberger, who became MSSWA’s first president. The association began with 85 charter members and held its first annual meeting on May 9, 1969.

MSSWA was established to support and strengthen the profession by promoting professional networking, sharing best practices, sponsoring workshops and conferences, and advancing quality school social work licensure and leadership across Minnesota.

Our History

More than 50 years later, MSSWA continues to thrive, guided by its original mission. Networking, professional leadership, and continuing education remain central to the association’s work, along with strong partnerships developed over time. MSSWA maintains liaison relationships with organizations such as the Coalition of Licensed Social Workers, the Student Services Coalition for Effective Education, Education Minnesota’s Special Education Task Force, and others, and works closely with the Minnesota Department of Education.

At the regional and national levels, MSSWA actively participates in the Midwest School Social Work Council alongside neighboring states to share knowledge and promote professional standards. Since 2002, members have also had the option to join the School Social Work Association of America (SSWAA) at a reduced rate, expanding access to national resources and advocacy.

MSSWA’s legislative committee plays a vital role in advocating for children, families, education, and the school social work profession. From protecting licensure to promoting funding for student support services, the association continues to educate policymakers about the essential role school social workers play in reducing barriers to student success.

MSSWA is proud of its strong history of advocacy and service and remains committed to supporting school social workers as they connect schools, families, and communities to help students thrive.
