Nuhu Sims, PhD

Restorative Practices Consultant, Minnesota Department of Education

Dr. Noah “Nuhu” Isaiah Sims is an educator, scholar, and equity leader dedicated to advancing transformative change in education. He holds a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction and focuses on examining and challenging systemic barriers to equity within educational institutions.

Dr. Sims began his career as a social studies teacher before serving as an equity teacher in Osseo Area Schools, where he led culturally responsive teaching initiatives and professional development efforts. He later served as Director of Equity and Restorative Practices for Brooklyn Center Community Schools, leading district-wide efforts in restorative justice, equity, and organizational change.

Since 2017, Dr. Sims has taught as an adjunct professor at the University of Minnesota, teaching courses on culture, power, education, and equity-based pedagogy. His work is informed by Cultural Anthropology, Critical Race Theory, Post-Colonial Theory, and Diaspora Studies, as well as research and study experiences in East Africa.

Currently, Dr. Sims serves as a restorative practices consultant for the Minnesota Department of Education, where he supports statewide efforts to build equitable, restorative, and inclusive learning environments.
