Key to Curbing Bullies is Vigilance

That bullying exists in our schools is not news, nor are the effects of bullying on victims. For the past 20 years, school
officials have tried to curb bullying by increasing awareness among students and helping victims assert themselves.
These efforts have met with success, and this success points the way to the potential for success in other areas that
bedevil other seemingly intractable problems in education.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR:
COUNSELORS PART OF TEAMS THAT MEET STUDENT NEEDS

We are writing in response to the commentary by John Fitzgerald published in the Minnesota Educator [October issue, page 3] titled “Hard times worsen effects of school counselor shortage.”

The commentary “Hard times worsen effects of school counselor shortage” did an excellent job of describing the important work of school counselors. However, the article concluded that due to Minnesota’s low school counselor-to-student ratio, students’ social and emotional needs are going unmet. This conclusion ignores the diligent efforts of other student support personnel, such as school social workers, school psychologists, chemical health counselors and school nurses who also provide support services to students, including mental health services.

The Value of a School Social Worker

In the St. Paul public schools there are around 125 school social workers. While this number may seem adequate, the reality is that many of these professionals only work part-time and in some cases with more than one school. An unfortunate result is that school social workers are easily overloaded with cases and have to ration their time accordingly.
